Three Gods arrive in a very poor town in order to test the goodness of the people. The test is simple: they have to find someone who will provide them with accommodation. But the Gods are disappointed, because nobody receives them during their long journey. Only a penniless prostitute hosts them cordially: Shen Te. They offer gifts in exchange for her good deeds, hoping that Shen Te’s example will prove that good people also may lead a decent life. The gift allows Shen Te to pull herself together. Meanwhile, she becomes a subject of the God's’ experiment: will she be able to remain good in a poverty stricken world, where everybody is looking out for their own interests, or will she be forced to become a tiger in order to protect herself?
