The Official Program of the Interferences Festival

We hereby present the official program of the 5th Interferences International Theater Festival, an event organized every two years by the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj. Between November 24 and December 4 a total of twenty theatrical ensembles from 14 different countries will participate at this year’s festival. The motto of the 2016 edition of the festival is The Stranger’s Odyssey.

The event aims to approach the theme of the stranger through the productions of illustrious ensembles of contemporary theater from around the world. What is it that we can we learn about one of the most emblematic conditions of our times - that of the stranger? This is the issue addressed by the performances included within the festival, as well as the off-program events.

During the 11 days of the festival, the Cluj audience will have the opportunity to attend performances of creators such as: Tomaž Pandur (the homage performance that will open the festival), Armin Petras, Andriy Zholdak, Declan Donnellan, Michal Dočekal, Gábor Tompa, Helmut Stürmer, Jaram Lee, Andrei Șerban, Yuri Kordonsky, Viktor Bodó, Szabolcs Hajdu, as well as Jarosław Fret.

The festival will welcome for the first time to Cluj ensembles from Russia, Ireland, Macedonia, Luxembourg and Slovenia, while returning ensembles and artists will also be delighting theatre audiences. This year’s program of the Interferences festival includes two Brecht productions - The Good Person of Szechwan performed by the ensemble of the Bulandra Theater from Bucharest, directed by Andrei Șerban, and The Good Soul of Szechwan performed by the ensemble of the Vígszínház from Budapest, under Michal Dočekal’s direction, featuring Enikő Eszenyi.

The festival’s program is also augmented by additional events. At TIFF House daily dialogues with guest creators will take place, also film screenings, while other events, such as book launches, exhibition openings and concerts will ensue in multiple locations. The complete program is available here.

The festival is co-organized by the Corvineum Foundation. Its main institutional partners are: the Ministry of Culture, Romania; the Mayor's Office and City Council of Cluj; main sponsor: MOL Romania. The event is supported by the European Theatre Union, the Romanian Cultural Institute, UNITER, the Bethlen Gábor Fund, and the Department for Interethnic Relations.
