the hungarian theatre of cluj

The Hungarian Theatre of Cluj is a defining element in the cultural image of the city and is the oldest permanent Hungarian company. Since 2008 it has been a member of the Union of the Theatres of Europe. The theatre’s performances represent a progressive theatrical language that pays attention to current international trends. The repertoire contains both classical and contemporary Hungarian and international dramas. Besides the Main Hall and Studio performances, the theatre organizes reading performances and community building events, and every two years it hosts the Interferences International Theatre Festival.

The theatre strengthens its specific aesthetic, which was born at the intersection of the Hungarian theatrical tradition and the Romanian directorial school, by inviting artists who, in addition to creating performances acclaimed by both the general and the professional audience, continuously guarantee the spiritual freshness of the company.

The theatre offers a repertoire that serves a large audience while simultaneously creating a new type of audience demand that is being satisfied by the studio. The theatre endeavors to organize workshops, initiative-taking programs, and other events of interest both for the audience and the actors, and establishes a creative medium that is open and that pays close attention to the viewers.

The theatre's accomplished company is considered to be one of the strongest in the country. The regular growth of the team through the addition of young actors helps professional continuity and allows for an exchange of experience between different generations.

Taking advantage of its multicultural environment, the theatre aims to address not only a local or one single language community; its performances are always presented with Romanian, and often with English subtitles, too. The company regularly participates in the projects of the Union of the Theatres of Europe and considers the international representation of local values to be very important. It facilitates an encounter between local values and world theatrical trends and encourages discussion among artists.
